Lafayette History Rabbit Holes – Acalanes Radio Station KCEQ: Early Wendell Pleis at Scottsbluff High School, Nebraska 1958-1959

In the 1959 Bluff…

we find that Wendell is still teaching “General Mathematics” and is in charge of the “audio-visual equipment”.

Mr. Wendell Pleis obtained his B.S. degree from the University of Nebraska. He teaches General Mathematics and is in charge of the audio-visual equipment and services.

That’s backed up by the section on the audio-visual department.

AUDIO-VISUAL training enables students to operate projectors, recorders, and other equipment used for special class instruction. Here a student is preparing a tape recorder for use under the supervision of Mr. Pleis.

We’re not sure how or why the school seemed to divide duties between AUDIO-VISUAL and The Projectionists. When you read through the duties of The Projectionists, it appears that they picked up where AUDIO-VISUAL ended.

The Projectionists 1958-1959

“The harder we work, the higher we stand.” This is a goal set up by the projection crew for their workings throughout the school.

Projectionists provide a constant service to the school and individual classrooms. It is their duty to make available slides, motion pictures, or films for class study. Each boy donates his free time or study period to showing these study aids.

In addition to giving their time and service to the school, the crew receives training in using all types of projectors, microphones, spotlights, recorders, and other machines.

The music at the after-game dances and class parties is handled by crew members. They also run spotlights and other stage lighting facilities.

Projectionists operate as an organization under a constitution and officer leadership. This constitution was drawn up last year.

The work of the crew is never quite completed. Each day they show a series of assigned films to classes. Their willingness and determination to serve the school makes their goal close at hand and their time and service greatly appreciated.

Scottsbluff High School’s “Radio Production” program was still around this school year.

They did not have their own radio station. This was done in partnership with local stations.

That’s all the information on this part that we have at the moment. As with all these posts, please feel free to share any information you might have.

[…] This year it appears that The Projectionists were moving into electronics by building an “electric basketball foul indicator”. Also, this is two years into them having a “constitution” according to the 1959 Bluff. […]
