Lafayette History Rabbit Holes – Acalanes Radio Station KCEQ: Miramonte 1968-1969 Electronics Club

In the 1969 Mirada…

we find that there was an Electronics Club during the 1968-1969 school year.

One of Miramonte’s most unusual clubs, the Electronics Club, has undertaken various stimulating projects during the year. The group sponsored an unusual contest to raise money. Helium balloons were sold at noon to the student body, and the owners of the five balloons that traveled the farthest won the new Beatles double album. The money raised was used for equipment and projects. One of the most fascinating plans involved building a TV camera. The Electronics Club advisor is Mr. F. R. Davis.

No idea why the Electronics Club was suddenly considered to be “unusual” seeing as the club had been around since 1955.

What they did to raise money was clever. It both mirrored fundraising efforts that were being done by Clayton Valley High School at this time for their station (KVHS) and foreshadowed what Acalanes High School would do for their station (KCEQ) down the road.

The new Beatles album that people could win was the “White Album”.

They were ambitious this school year. They apparently built a TV camera, or at least were planning to build one.

There is no list of students, but it does say that Harold Hallikainen was the president.

Mr. F. R. Davis was their advisor.

This particular iteration of the Miramonte Electronics Club is in the Summer 1968 and Winter 1968-1969 amateur radio call books.

Summer 1968:

The entry states the following:

Winter 1968-1969:

The entry states the following:

The “B” in both entries indicates a club license.

That’s all the information on this part that we have at the moment. As with all these posts, please feel free to share any information you might have.
