Alice Barnham was interviewed by Brenda Hepler on May 30th, 2007. Alice came to Lafayette in 1974 after living for a brief period in Berkeley. She grew up in South Orange, NJ and was a very active library patron from an early age. Alice became active in Lafayette community affairs first through volunteering with the League of Women Voters, and then by volunteering at the Acalanes High School career center. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s she was also active in the Friends of the Lafayette Library, as a member of the board and as its president.
In this interview she describes how members of the Friends visited recently-built libraries around the Bay Area to get ideas to incorporate into the design of the 2009 Lafayette Library and Learning Center. This was in addition to operating a thriving used book sales operation, the proceeds from which both supported the existing library and helped to fund the building of the new one.
