Oral History: Gary Bedsworth — October 22nd, 2021

December 28, 2021 3 Comments

Gary Bedsworth was interviewed by Andree Duggan on October 22, 2021. Gary’s father, Jay Bedsworth, operated the Tunnel Inn Restaurant and also performed professional-level magic tricks on its stage in the 1940’s and 1950’s. In one trick Gary’s mother would be raised four feet into the air, then made to disappear. Gary later worked alongside his father there and afterwards at the Red Mill Inn, the successor to El Nido Rancho.

While going to school at Acalanes (1958-1962) I worked for Jay at the Red Mill. I worked in the kitchen, washed pots and pans, etc. The day before Mother’s Day I was in a rush to clean the pots and threw out the chicken stock!!! Carl, the chef, almost killed me !!! Jay gave me the keys to his convertible and a wad of cash and told me to visit every butcher shop and get chicken fat !!!! Luckily I found enough and kept my after school job !!.. Jay was kind enough to show me his “famous” deck of cards trick… El Nido // Red Mill is a great memory.

      Buz,
You might remember me…classmate at Acalanes. Glad to hear you’re still around…..hope all’s well.
Can’t believe almost 10 years since last reunion. I occasionally hear from Pete Goodman, but not really anyone else, and don’t know who else is still around.
Enjoyed reading your post. I worked at Emil Villa’s Hickory Pit in Walnut Creek…..those were tedious jobs.
      All the best,

Jay Bedsworth was also the manager of Roundhill Country Club in the 1970s when I was growing up on Roundhill Road. (My parents bought a new Smith ranch house in 1966.)
