Mabel Skuce moved to Lafayette in 1946, and she has lived here ever since. In this interview, she describes and discusses the city as it existed in the middle of the last century: its stores, restaurants, and schools, as well as some of its more general characteristics. Her “tour” of the Lafayette of 60-plus years ago presents the city as it was before Highway 24 was built, when you could buy a hamburger at Rick’s drive-in and patrons of The Roundup could tie up their horses in front of the establishment.
Tim Berndt says
Yikes! Mabel Skuce may be well intentioned but has a horrible recollection of Lafayette in the 1950’s. I was raised there from 1951, when my parents moved from Oakland. Our family moved just down the road to Moraga in 1969 after I graduated from De La Salle.
