President’s Message

July 9, 2013 Leave a Comment

We here at the Lafayette Historical Society hope you are enjoying your summer.  We have been busy planning various activities and programs for the summer months that we hope you will enjoy.

Our First Annual Treasure Hunt was a great success!!  Clues were emailed to participants on Friday, June 14, and participants had the weekend to try to find the answers to all of the clues.  There were more than 70 sign-ups. We drew names from those who correctly answered all of the questions for the Grand Prize (a picnic basket and $100 gift certificate from Diablo Foods and Mechanics Bank). The Meade Family was the grand prize winner.  We hope to have the Second Annual event next year.  Thank you to all who participated.  This year’s questions and answers can be found here.

Please keep checking out our webpage.  We have been adding many posts to archival materials so they can be enjoyed by local history lovers:  the actual recording of a talk given by Jennie Bickerstaff (Lafayette’s beloved schoolteacher) in 1956 is available in the “archives” tab; Valerie and Kristen are adding some of our oral histories to YouTube to be enjoyed (one of them is the 1970 dedication of Peter Thomson’s anvil); check out our Facebook page.  And now you can add your own historical photos of Lafayette and view some funny ads from past years of the Lafayette Sun.

This summer’s programs include Stu Swiedler speaking on “Aerial Views and Images of an Electric Railroad” (Wednesday, August 14 @ 7 pm in the Community Hall) and “A Light at the End of the Tunnel – Yes, THAT Tunnel” from CalTrans representatives (Saturday, August 24 @ 3 pm in the Community Hall).  More information on the upcoming speaker series.

Also please note the bios of two of our newest (and youngest) History Room volunteers. We are always looking for additional history lovers who might like to staff a two-hour shift on a weekly or bi-monthly basis.  Our volunteers make it happen!!

Please stop by the History Room to say hello. We are open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10-2.
